So I think it’s time I explain a little bit about my current life situation and give you a little background on my whole education situation.
So I decided to apply to university during my last year in high school and not take a gap year or an extra year of high school like I had previously planned to do. My last year of high school was rushed and stressful as I was also participating in an exchange program which made getting my last necessary credits very difficult. Luckily with a lot of hard work and cooperation from my high school administration, I was able to graduate on time with all my friends.
It seemed like that summer after high school whizzed by and before I knew it I was headed off to university. I attended Carleton University in Ottawa for psychology, in hopes of one day completing my honours, masters, and phD to become a Clinical Psychologist. I’m a strong student and the first semester of university went by really well, but after Christmas when the semester changed I began getting really bored in my classes. The subjects didn’t interest me as much and I quickly started realizing that I didn’t want to be in school for around 10 years, in my opinion, wasting my life away.
I quickly starting thinking of things that interest me, my passions, things that I could do every day and remain happy. I started looking into college programs as I thought that a more hands-on learning style would keep me more engaged then lectures (which university is notorious for). I stumbled upon an Event Management course at Algonquin College (also in Ottawa) and was thrilled. The classes sounded interesting and with less students, which really appealed to me. The best part, the course is only a year long!
My new dream came to a quick halt when I found out that the Event Management course was a graduate certificate which meant that to apply to the course you had to have completed at least two years of schooling. I e-mailed the program coordinator asking if there was any way I could make it into the course without having to take another year of courses. She told me that if I completed two online courses this summer, as well as 100 volunteer hours pertaining to event planning, all by September 1st, then I would be accepted into the course.
It’s now July 13th and I can say all is going well! My courses are almost coming to an end and I’m excited to finally have some of summer to enjoy. I currently have almost 60/100 hours with a month and a half left, which is further than I thought I’d be! Having a job, volunteering as much as I can, and having courses to do can be a lot at times. I find time management has always been a strong quality of mine and it’s definitely came in handy this summer.
I’m really excited to start my program in the fall, and although I’ll be younger than many of the other students, and have much less experience in the Event Management world, I’m really excited to learn and expand my knowledge. I’m not 100% if I’m making the right choice, or if I’m just going to end up wasting more money like last year which stresses me out quite a bit. Some how this choice just feels right though. I guess only time will tell.
